Tower Tour - KVI

Tower Tour Home - KVI - KIRO - KOMO - KPTK& KTTH - KGNW & KJR

When I stopped to take Photo’s of KVI, I snapped this picture. Looking at the tower while walking from the building to the tower on the beach. Later when I uploaded the picture to the computer for editing. I liked the photo but then noticed the flying object to the left of the upper white section of the tower.

Built in 1936, the KVI transmitter building has a full residence up stairs where the engineer for KVI lived until the mid eighties. The Transmitter and Generator are located in the basement. Can you see the KVI in the railing? You can see the fuel tank to the right of the building.

Eagles flying around the KVI tower

At first I thought I had caught an Airplane. Upon closer inspection I discovered that it was a Bald Eagle. Upon even closer inspection I noticed not one but two eagles in the picture. The second Eagle you can see below the first Eagle just above the cloud (see photo to the left). They live in Fir Trees that are to the north of the tower (left as you look at the photo).

Below you can see the marsh habitat that is home to many Blue Herons and other Birds. There is actually a fresh water stream flowing through it.

The Base of the Tower. Could this be one of the oldest radio towers in the puget Sound. Its over 70 years old

This is why we call it KVI Beach.

Bauer FB-5000 Main from 60's to 80's

In the early 60’s KVI purchased two Bauer Transmitters to replace the Western Electric transmitter which took up the whole basement. There was a 1kw Bauer and a 5kw Bauer. The 5kw Bauer was used as the main until the mid 80’s when KVI purchased a Harris MW5. At that time the 1kw Bauer was removed.

Harris MW 5 Backup?

Nautel XR12 Main

In 2006 KVI got a Nautel XR12 Solid state transmitter.

KVI now uses a Nautel transmitter as their main
